Where Did the Summer Go?

Time flies. Today I helped Tony move the “big stuff” to his new apartment at UCLA. It just seemed like yesterday summer vacation had just begun. Driving up to the campus was fun. We had loaded the truck earlier this morning and appeared to have tied everything down with some rope. But the funny thing is . . . we had to stop at least three times to secure the items in the bed of the truck. Guess we need more knot training from the Boy Scouts.

I’m glad we left kind of early because the bed took a long time to put together. We had to use some lame tools because we forgot the power tools. Nice apartment though.

With Tony returning to school for the fall next weekend, summer is definitely over. What was the highlight? Well, we couldn’t really go anywhere this summer again. Quite honestly, we can’t afford to vacation yet. But I did have a few things that I enjoyed this summer.

The cool thing for the summer was that Tony and I spent a lot of time together almost every day. We both work near Murphy Canyon, near Qualcomm Stadium. So we carpooled four days a week. He had his internship with a civil engineering firm, Richard Brady and Associates. It was just a lot of shooting the breeze in the car on the way home, venting about stuff at work, listening to the cool engineering things he was learning, or getting riled up about the liberals via the Roger Hedgecock radio talk show on KOGO.

I don’t miss teaching at all. Although I have to say that I do think about the students I did enjoy every day. I will miss the fun of the tennis team. What a blast. I wonder if the new coach will have/create as much fun. Those are the people I miss. And although I don’t think I’ve landed in the right place yet, I am thankful that I have work, that I don’t work with teenagers anymore, that I have a nice roof over my head, and that I have a great wife and son who love me. And while we still haven’t made it to Hawaii yet or watched the finals of the US Open in New York, there were times that I would not trade for those things.
