Cool Lunch

Monday, August 15th, 2005

I never thought that I would get to eat such a cool lunch while at work. There is a fundraiser going on right now outside where the new Navy Chief Selectees are selling food: rice, pancit, and lumpia. It’s kind of pricey for $5. You only get two lumpia. But two is better than none. It’s not often that I get to eat Filipino food, only when I go home to visit with family.

WordPress 1.5.2

Monday, August 15th, 2005

Hah! Take that OSX and Transmit. I successfully upgraded to WP 1.5.2 without a hitch.

I copied my old files from a double backup. Then I replaced the new files into the copied folder. Then uploaded the updated wordpress folder into my site. Customized files and everything else are in tact.

I don’t give up easily from failure. And I learn quickly.

P.S. This is post number “pib hundred and pipty-pib” (That’s 555 in Engish).

Scary Sick Feeling

Sunday, August 14th, 2005

I thought upgrading to the new version of WP 1.5.2 would be a good idea. So as usual, I ignored the warnings to backup my site and then, I proceeded with the upgrade. I uploaded via Transmit FTP software on my Apple (which uses OSX). And there you go, all my site files are automatically deleted.

Here’s what Mark had to say:

Then you need to learn this about OSX… when OSX says that it will overwrite a folder, it will DELETE THE FOLDER AND EVERYTHING IN IT and then put in the new files. Windows ADDS new files and overwrites existing files, but doesn’t delete anything. I’ve seen a lot of people get bitten by that behavior. :-(

I was in a silent panic mode. I had just spent hours this past week finishing up my Greece project for EDTEC 541, which is due this week since it’s the last week of summer school. At that point, I deeply regretted not having a backup of my files.

So I email site5 Tech Support. I asked them to restore my site using a backup earlier than 8:00 PM tonight. I fretted for about an hour, taking a break and talking to Pourpa who had just come home from a weekend trip to the Bay Area.

No point in saying it. I’m making a backup of my files as I’m writing this.

Much to my relief, they were able to restore all my files. And so my main site and my school project are working once again.

Zone Alarm Woes

Saturday, August 13th, 2005

The new version of Zone Alarm, version 6.0.631.003, is a bust on my old PC downstairs. It was not compatible with something in Windows XP Service Pack 2. The old beast could not access the Internet because something (Zone Alarm) was preventing it from obtaining an IP address from the DHCP server. I discovered this rather quickly, thankfully, when I shut down Zone Alarm. Then the Internet started working again.

So I downloaded the old version and uninstalled the new one. After reinstalling the old version, .5.094.000, everything is back to normal.

So beware. The new version works on my PC upstairs, which is a much newer machine. Use at your own risk.

P.S. Microsoft Windows sucks.

Irritated

Friday, August 12th, 2005

I’m feeling irritated by the rising price of oil and the resultant increases at the gas pump. The oil mongers and Arabs are all getting richer while more money is taken out of my paycheck to account for rising transportation costs.

U.S. oil has risen 51 percent since the start of the year. The stage could be set for further gains, with no let-up seen in global demand growth and no signs that $60-plus oil is harming the economy of the world’s largest consumer, the United States.

Yahoo! News (Reuters) - August 12, 2005

Interestingly, the economy does not seem to be hurt by these outrageous prices. Certainly, my personal economy is suffering.

I think I may have to start riding public transportation to work. It will cost less than $100 monthly for a bus/trolley pass versus the $200 plus monthly in gasoline costs for driving my personal vehicle.

One Down, One to Go

Thursday, August 11th, 2005

Summer school will be over next week. I’ve finished one class ahead of time, just turning in my final project tonight. I completed 12 out of the 20 pages of my web site for that class. I plan to finish the rest after summer school. Here it is: Geek in Greece.

Now the other class that I am taking is just plain craziness. I have a massive assignment due Tuesday night, a final exam essay, and the final exam– all next week. This is going to a “fun” weekend of school work.

I can’t wait until August 20th, the last day of class. I am taking a break for sure this fall. I will pick up this new degree program in January of 2006.

Company Picnic 2005

Sunday, August 7th, 2005

S Tech’s company picnic yesterday was more fun than I thought it would be. Despite the strange Saturday traffic on the 15 South and a one-hour commute, we were pleasantly surprised with the event at Party Pals. By the time we arrived, we were hungry. The menu included:

  • Fish Tacos
  • Potato Salad
  • Beans
  • Black Bean salad
  • Hamburgers
  • Hot Dogs
  • BBQ Chicken
  • Watermelon
  • Brownies
  • Assorted Drinks

The food was good.

For fun, there was a zip line, rock climbing wall, jumping and slides for the little kids, golf driving range, arcade games, table tennis, basketball, jukebox, air hockey, some type of foosball game, and my favorite . . . Jeopardy.

The highlight was the first Jeopardy game. Of course, I won . . . smartest one wins! Just kidding, a little bit. The questions were not that difficult, mostly identifying songs, movies, and tv shows. You get 100 points for each correct answer with no penalty for wrong answers. First contestant to 500 wins the game and gets to select a prize bought by S Tech!

I got off to a poor start. I couldn’t identify Madonna’s voice in the first question, which is especially lame since she was at one time my favorite artist in the late 80s. The guy next to me pulled out to a 200-point lead while the remaining three of us contestants had a big ZERO. My fist correct answer came with identifying a movie that belonged to a song that was played. I recognized the song, but couldn’t remember the name of it or the movie that it played in. But I pressed the buzzer anyway.

It’s A Whole New World . . . Aladdin

Because I forgot the title of the song, I sang a few words and when I got to “It’s a whole new world,” I gave my answer: Aladdin. And I was on my way to victory, finally on the scoreboard.

For the second question I answered correctly, I had to identify the voice of Bill Clinton. I wanted so badly to say what a disgusting and shameful president he was, but I didn’t.

For the third question, I correctly identified the song, Y.M.C.A. At this point, I tied up with the guy next to me, both of us having 300 points.

My fourth correctly-answered question put me in the lead with 400 points when I correctly identified the voice of John F. Kennedy. Only needed one more correct answer to win.

The guy next to me beat me to the buzzer, answered his question correctly, and tied the game at 400. Now the heat was on. We both needed only one more correct answer to win.

My winning question: “What type of event would you be at if you heard this?” After the first few notes, I pressed the buzzer, answered, and won!

Sweet Victory. I’m finally a Jeopardy Champion

Surprisingly, I won a prize too, something that I was not expecting. And I write this post, I’m enjoying a strawberry dacquiri smoothie made with my new Smoothie Maker.

Sample of Greece Movie

Monday, August 1st, 2005

I finally finished creating and editing the movie of our vacation to Greece. Here’s a little sample taken from our second to last day there during the Family Reunion. My only beef is with the code I have to use to insert the movie onto this page. It does not validate as XHTML. Does anybody know how to validate this without errors? Other than that, enjoy!
