Josephine and I were watching Oprah this morning. The guests on the show had a good metaphor for resentment. She said:
Resentment is taking a poison and hoping the other person dies.
Susan St. James, whose 14-year old son was killed in a plane accident
The guests were the Ebersoll family, of NBC Sports fame (Dick) and actress (St. James). Their 14-year old son, Teddy, was killed in the plane crash. They have much to be angry and bitter about, but instead were getting on with their life without resentment or anger.
It’s a good definition. When you think about it, harboring bitterness and resentment just hurts yourself in the long run. There is much to be said about resentment shortening one’s lifespan.
