Software Downgrade

Software Downgrade

Bluetooth = wireless file transfer

Bluetooth + Verizon + Motorola V3c RAZR (S/W .03) = crippled gear so you have to pay Verizon to get ringtones, pics, and videos

What’s the point of Bluetooth on the phone if you can’t transfer files from a computer to your phone? Exactly. There is no point. So I did some “research” on the Web and found a couple of forum threads that attempt to “explain” how to Flash my Verizon RAZR phone from a software version .03 (crappy crippled Bluetooth) to version .02 (full Bluetooth-enabled with OBEX). But if you’ve ever read technical support forums before you already know that the people writing the technical tips don’t explain things very well. Additionally, you have to read through pages and pages of useless information before you find a couple of useful tidbits.

So this post will summarize the steps you need to follow in order to downgrade your Verizon Motorola V3c RAZR phone software from .03 to .02.

Equipment and software needed:

  • Verizon Motorola V3c RAZR phone with .03 software
  • Mini USB cable (you’ll need to download and install the necessary USB drivers - sorry I’m not writing a tutorial on that)
  • PC (sorry, this flash procedure does not work on a Mac)
  • Motorola RSD Lite v. 1.9.1 (you’ll have to register)
  • GATW_X_01.0F.02P (this is the flash file)

Procedure to follow:

  1. Install Motorola RSD Lite v. 1.9.1.
  2. Unzip the flash file; be sure to note its location on your PC (recommend the desktop).
  3. Connect your phone to the PC via the mini-USB cable.
  4. Start the Motorola RSD Lite v. 1.9.1 software (if it does not recognize your phone automatically, then you probably did not install the correct USB drivers.
  5. Browse for the flash file in the RSD software window that opens after you start it.
  6. Click Start.
  7. It takes about 15 minutes to finish; DO NOT UNPLUG the cable from the phone or turn it off.
  8. Power off your phone when instructed to do so. (It will tell you to manually power up the phone.)
  9. Power phone back on.
  10. Activate and reprogram your phone with *228 (Option 1).
  11. Pair your phone with your Bluetooth-enabled computer; it should work fully now with PCs and Macs - sorry pairing is another tutorial that I am not interested in writing.

I also found this page to be very helpful. Hope that helps and saves you time!

  1. Hi, well I’ve been planning on getting a RAZR for my Verizon plan so this is very helpful. This was my only issue. Thanks and I hope it works…. but one question.

You say to download “GATW_X_01.0F.03P” flash file. We don’t download “GATW_X_01.0F.02P” which is what we will be flashing to?

  2. Yes Wade, you’re correct. You will want to download the GATW_X_01.0F.02P file.

  3. Thanks Joe! I’ll let you know how it turns out.

  4. I have a couple of concerns about this.
Will the phone be locked after I flash it?
    Is there a noticeable difference between .03P & .02P?

    Syphon | April 1st, 2006 at 8:46 pm | Permalink
  5. I don’t really know what a “locked” phone is. But my phone worked fine afterwards. Also, if you don’t know what the .02 downgrade is for, then you probably should not proceed with it because you won’t have any use for it. Do some research on the links that I provided in my article before you proceed so you can determine whether or not the .02 features are what you need and want.

For myself, I want to be able to transfer files using Bluetooth from my PowerBook to the phone. I don’t want to have to pay for Get It Now because I can simply use my mp3 files and transfer to my phone as ring tones. I can make pictures and use them on my phone if I want without having to pay Verizon for the ability to customize my phone’s appearance.

  6. By locked I mean does it require some sort of code to access the main menu after the flash? When you say “Activate & reprogram with *228″, what exactly does *228 do?

What I meant by differences with .02 & .03 was UI related. I’ve read many topics and posts at the osnn forum, but I didn’t come across any that mentioned any differences with the interface. I can assume there isn’t, but it doesn’t hurt to ask.

    I appreciate your help.

I know what this downgrade is for. I’ve read many topics and posts over at the osnn forum, but none seemed to mention any changes with the UI when downgraded. I can assume the interface is the same as version .03, but it doesn’t hurt to ask.

    I appreciate your help.

  9. transfers and custom ringtones that badly. So, I took the risk, and flashed my Verizon-crippled RAZR with the older .02 version firmware. It worked like a charm. I now have all the features a Motorola RAZR phone is supposed to have. I highly recommendthis guide if you want to do this yourself. And yes, it only works with Windows (or an Intel iMac with Windows installed via Boot Camp, in my case hehe).

  12. […] Never mind. I found the answer: Upgrade to 4.04 Once MPT is open press F6, click on the Communication Tab at the top. Click the Change Modem button Next button to begin wizard. Select Motorola USB Modem and click Next Check the "Do Not Automatically Detect" checkbox Select Motorola CDMA Find v3cm in the list and finish up the wizard. Mulimedia Studio is now enabled, and I can transfer my pictures, mp3s etc back and forth with USB cable (or Bluetooth, I imagine). Thanks to: http://howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=801158 for how to upgrade to 4.04 http://whatsbruin.net/2006/03/25/software-downgrade/ for simple intructions and links to downgrade […]

  13. Hey Joe:
I was successful in the downgrade. I now want to transfer mp3 ringtones to the phone is that possible? It screwed up my address books. Also, I don’t have a bluetooth pc. Second is it possible to reverse the process, ie return to the original software?

    the1rock | April 17th, 2006 at 7:13 pm | Permalink
  14. You can return to the original software by downloading the .03 version and then flashing it to your phone.

As far as transferring ringtones, I just transfer them via Bluetooth, but this can’t be done with the .03 software.

  16. Hi.. Thanks for the tutorial… Umm.. so let me get this straight… after I do flash.. I will have everything working on my verizon crippled razr.. But I will have to call *228 to get my phone reprogrammed? When You do that do you have to talk to someone or is it done over an automated system, because I want to do this, But i don’t want to have to explain what I did to my phone that makes me have to get it reactivated

    Zach | April 21st, 2006 at 9:16 am | Permalink
  17. If you’ve been a Verizon customer, you should know what *228 is. Try it before you do the downgrade (see previous comments about *228).

*228 is something you’re supposed to be doing on your phone on a regular basis. I try to do it at least once every two or three months if not more.

  25. Yea, I read about it here.

Here is the follow up explaining the author’s mistake:

So i went to the Verizon store and had them flash my phone to .04. well it turns out that the website was wrong and they have not enabled OBEX in .04. But I did read somewhere that if you flash your phone to .02 and then take it to .04 it keeps the OBEX open.

All i know is I’m not touching my .02 now that it’s working.

  26. I am ready to try your procedure. However, I would like to backup my current .03 firmware so I can reinstall if I run into any problems. Do you know how to do this? If so, thank you for your help.

    Bryan | April 28th, 2006 at 6:44 pm | Permalink
  27. Joe — great job on the discriptive step-by-step. Just wanted to let all of you know that if you upgrade from .02 to .04 at Verizon, you do get to keep your OBEX. .04 is good because .02 has some issues with battery life and the phone has problems refreshing RAM as well. Those were corrections made for .03 (that .04 also has). But the best part of .04 is that it has a major bug fix where you can now close your phone and it’ll actually end calls as opposed to having them run endlessly until you actually hit the end button.

    Ari | April 28th, 2006 at 7:01 pm | Permalink
  28. Bryan, you can also download the .03 file from the link in the tutorial. so you can flash back to .03 if you want to do that.

  29. I just got home from a Verizon Store for the software upgrade to .04. OBEX still works (tested it on my Mac with bluetooth). So as long as you upgrade to .04 from .02, OBEX transfer will still work.

  32. Hey Joe - Complete noob here. I’m having trouble with step one of your instructions. First of all, the link you provide for downling Motorola RSD Lite v 1.9.1 is no good… I registered for the site, but I can’t find the file anywhere. Anyway, I believe I was able to find the file by googling it, and I saved it to my desktop. the file is a “RAR” file? What is this? I have XP. My computer has no idea how to open the file when I double click it. It actually tries to open it in Windows Media Player. How do I install RSD Lite v 1.9.1? It’s not a zip file, it’s simply one file with “RAR” type. HELP!

    Eric | May 3rd, 2006 at 9:17 pm | Permalink
  33. Javier, You need to follow the instructions completely. If RSD does not recognize your phone, you probably don’t have the correct USB drivers installed.

My tutorial is not about installing drivers. You’ll have to do that on your own.

Eric– Try downloading and installing winzip from winzip.com. It should open RAR files also.

    JoeBruin88 | May 3rd, 2006 at 11:20 pm | Permalink
  34. Thanks Joe… I ended up figuring it out on my own last night. I downloaded WinRAR and unzipped the RSD Lite files. I was able to flash my phone to version .02 successfully. The true test will come tonight when I attempt to transfer my phone book from my V3c to my Lexus via bluetooth!

  40. Hey Joe,
I installed the USB drivers for the v3c that came with the mobile office kit and the usb phonebook transfer works fine, which leads me to believe that the usb drivers are installed correctly. When I installed the RSD Lite v1.9.1 software and windows begins to recognize a few devices:
    1. Motorola Communication Interface
the others only showed up the first time.
When i told it to install the drivers automatically, it said it could not find them and that the device may not be working properly because it couldn’t find the necessary software. Any idea how I can correct that so I can begin using RDS Lite?
Thanks so much for bringing all this out.

  58. OBJECTIVE:
To Enable USB and OBEX support on CDMA Razr V3c phones that have been disabled by Verizon service provider. Enabling support allows users to upload and download their Phone Contacts, Calendar, and Messages to their computers for backups and other reasons.

    EQUIPMENT:
    • Fully charged Verizon RAZR V3C Phone with GATW_01.15.04 (or x.03) software version
    • USB A to USB mini B (5 pin) interface cable
    • Motorola PhoneTools v4.0x
    • DriverTool.zip
    • Motorola Product Support Tool (PST) 7.2.3 & Patch
    • Motorola Product Support Tool USB Driver
    • P2KSeem

    PROCEDURE:
    1. Create a sub directory on your Windows XP computer and name it RazrHack on your C drive or other.
    2. Download Motorola PhoneTools v4.0x into RazrHack sub directory.
    3. Extract MPT.zip to sub directory called MPT within RazrHack.
    4. Go to http://www.bvrp.com/customers/motorola/upgrade/US/ and click on the hyperlink title “Click here if you use a CDMA phone.” Or go to http://www/bvrp.com/Customers/Motorola/DriverTool.zip to download the Driver Tool.
    5. Save DriverTool.zip to RazrHack
    6. Extract DriverTool.zip to sub directory called DriverTool within RazrHack.
    7. Download Motorola Product Support Tool (PST) 7.2.3 & Patch into sub directory RazrHack
    8. Extract MPST.zip to sub directory called MPST within RazrHack.
    9. Download Motorola Product Support Tool USB Driver from www.v710.org/mark/Files/E815-V710-DriverPack1.zip and into sub directory RazrHack.
    10. Extract E815-V710-DriverPack1.zip to sub directory called PST-USB within RazrHack.
    11. Download P2KSeem from www.v710.org/mark/Files/P2KSeem4V710.zip to RazrHack.
    12. Extract P2KSeem4V710.zip into sub directory called P2KSeeem4V710 within RazrHack.
    13. Install Motorola PhoneTools v4.0x and run update for application updates the Internet.
    14. Go to C:\RazrHacks\DriverTool and click on DriverTool.exe to install.
    15. Install Motorola Product Support Tool (PST) 7.2.3 & Patch.
    16. Go into PST-USB and read readme.txt file.
    17. Determine where PST-USB files are to be copied to for C:\i386 ( or C:\WINDOWS\i386) and Motorola Product Support Tool.
    18. Connect powered down Verizon RAZR V3c phone to Windows XP computer using the USB interface cable.
    19. Run Motorola Product Support Tool (PST). NOTE: Windows Add New Hardware Wizard should run, automatically search for, find and install the new driver. If not, point the wizard to the PST-USB sub directory. The phone will now be listed as “Motorola USB Modem” in Device Manager under Modems.
    20. If your phone shows up in Device Manager as Motorola USB Modem, launch PST using the Phone Programmer icon off the start menu. Again, if this is your first time doing this, or you have connected the data cable to a different USB port, the Add New Hardware wizard will run. It will try to install “Communications Class - Control Interface”, “Data Logging MCU Interface”, “Test Command Interface,” and “Accessories Interface.” For all of these, choose “Install from a list or specific location…” then click next. On the following screen, to the right to the “include this location in the search” click browse… and direct C:\RazrHack\PST-USB for the V3C PST_USB driver. If the add new hardware wizard does NOT run, check device manager for a Motorola USB Device group with Accessories Interface, Data Logging MCU, and Test Command Interface listed. If you have them, you can proceed. If you do not, unplug your phone, power it off/on, and reconnect. These devices must be installed for P2KSeem to connect to the phone! They will only be listed in Device Manager while PST is still running so DO NOT EXIT PST!
    21. PST really gives NO indication that it is connected to your phone. To verify connectivity, launch PST.
    22. When the main interface appears, click File,New, Phone Book File then OK. You will be presented with Untitled Phone Book File. Use the Phone pull down, and click READ. PST should start reading the contents of your phone’s Contacts. If it finishes, PST is connected. NOTE: Be careful when doing this in PST, choosing an improper option (even for reading) can fry your phone!!
    23. While PST 7.2.3 is running on your computer, run P2kSeem.exe from C:\RazrHack\P2KSeem4v710.
    24. P2KSeem should say “connected” in the lower left corner of the application box.
    25. Locate the LOAD area in the bottom right corner area. Change the Seem to 2742 and Record to 1.
    26. Verify the 2 fields have the correct entries then Click “LOAD FROM PHONE” button.
    27. From within the application, you will see many hex codes arranged in columns and rows. Under Selected Byte Details (lower left section) you will see OFFSET:0000 (location of cursor at load time).
    28. To backup the original seem, click “save to file” and go to C:\RazrHack
    29. Name backup file to 2742_0001.bak and click OK to save.
    30. Go down to row 000060 and column over to e3 (may be e2 on some phones) should say offset 006a.
    31. Click on box for BIT 0 to put a check mark in it. This sets BIT 0 = 1 (enables USB File transfer for music/video/pictures in the Motorola phone tools software). NOTE: DO NOTE EXPERIMENT WITH OTHER BITS!
    32. Click “Save to Phone.”
    33. Click “Restart Phone.”
    34. Close P2kSeem & PST
    35. Unplug the USB cable from your phone, and then plug it back in (resets connection with the pc after programming).
    36. Run Motorola Phone tools.
    37. Press or go to menu/setup/general setup.
    38. Click on communication tab and choose change modem.
    39. Click on Next 2 times.
    40. Click the box beside “Do not automatically detect…” & click next.
    41. Click on Motorola CDMA, choose V3CM and Click next.
    42. Click Finish and OK.

Now your Motorola PhoneTools software should connect with your phone, and show you the Multimedia Studio, Contact, and Calendar options. If not, reboot your pc and reopen phone tools to connect again.

i webt through the process, flashed the phone with the files given here, checked the s/w version on the phone and it is now .02…however with my io bluetooth adapter, it still says it only supports the headset feature and not the file transfer

do i maybe need new bluetooth software? this is frustrating especially after seeing this worked for everybody else lol

  62. actually i just figured it out…
this is how i got it to work…

while my phone and pc were connected for the hands free gateway, it wouldnt allow obex….

however, when i dropped the pc on my razr, magically the obex file transfer option showed up and i could transfer…

so although it wasn’t technically connected, it could transfer

    weird

  68. Hi Guys,

I’ve been reading all about downgrading to s/w version .02, but I went to the Verizon store the other day and inquired about a s/w upgrade and the guy had no idea what I was talking about.

I’m a Verizon customer and got this phone for free with the new every two plan. I’m terrified about downgrading my phone to the .02 s/w version because I’m afraid I’ll seriously screw up my phone.

If I do downgrade to the .02 version can I still flash it to the .04 version? Also, I purchased Motorola Phone Tools 4.0 and I couldn’t get anything to transfer (eventhough I could see my phone).

    This is so frustrating!!!

  69. Hello Again!

I feel like such an idiot! I can’t tell you how many hours I’ve spent online just researching how to get my VZW RAZR V3c to transfer pics.

This site has been a HUGE LIFESAVER — THANK YOU!!!!

I can now transfer pics, mp3’s, etc. after downgrading from 01.15.04 to .02. Now that it’s working I’m afraid to upgrade to .04! I’m a PC Tech and follow this rule…”If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!”

THANKS AGAIN! and you can bet I’ll be checking these forums 1st for ANYTHING I need!

  76. Rob and MCPhi– I strongly advise searching for the drivers I mentioned in the tutorial using the provided link. Someone else was stubborn and wanted to use the lame drivers included with that Motorola Mobile Office Kit and they would not work as well. Once he used the recommended drivers, the procedure worked properly. Unfortunately, I don’t have the drivers available for download.

  78. For anyone who’s having trouble getting drivers for their RAZR V3C, go to Joe’s tutorial and surf over the osnn.net site. Download the drivers for your phone from here. I had to use RSD Lite 2.5 because I couldn’t find the 1.9.1 version.

JOE…I’ll have to double-check but I believe you said in a previous post that you were able to upgrade to s/w 4.0 and still have transfer/bluetooth functionality. Is this correct? I’m thinking of giving it a shot after successfully downgrading to s/w/2.0.

Ok, now that my Oscar winning speech is over, I have one last question. Has anyone taken the phone back to a Verizon location to be upgraded to .04 from .02 and verified that the OBEX still works afterwards. If someone could give me a yes or no on that, I would really appreciate it. Thanks again guys and gals!

  80. Quick question. Is this known to void the warranty of the cell phone?

    Andrew | June 9th, 2006 at 9:27 am | Permalink
  81. Big thanks to Joe for the straight forward instructions on changing the firmware on Motorola RAZRs!
It was a long process to get all the necessary drivers and software, but well worth it.
I changed .02 to .04 and the OBEX still works on 2 phones. I noticed the phone performs alot better with .04 version. The voice dialing works much better, no more “did you say?” Also, the phone connection/data transfer icon doesn’t stay on all the time.
Also, the software is meant to be changed around from carrier to carrier, by the service provider. Now if you try a warranty claim because you were “flashing” your phone on your own and screwed up…you might get denied service. Just say the phone died and leave it at that, if you have a warranty.

  83. Hi All!

I successfully downgraded from .04 to .02 using Joe’s tips last month. However, I noticed that I can’t use VZ Navigator anymore.

Can I flash the phone using Joe’s tips back to .04? I went into a VZ Store and they had no idea what I was talking about regarding a s/w flash upgrade.

I will try a different VZ Store tomorrow. What do I tell them so they will flash my phone? Should I try the “Master Reset” option on my phone to upgrade the s/w?

    Thanks for your help!

  84. I’ve successfully upgraded .03 to .04 instead of downgrading .03 to .02! At the end, after I power up the phone, I activated and I was almost scared that I might brick my phone. The first attempt was unsuccessfull, so I power off and on again for the the second attempt. Then it failed again and last, I heard something on the phone that was suppose to be the operator command, so I listen to follow instruction and press option 1 and my phone has successfully activated! Thanks for the suggestion!

  85. Beth,

Just tell them you want the software upgrade to .04. Don’t tell them about downgrading; they will look at you strangely because not all the technicians will know what you are talking about. It’s not necessary to give them too much information.

Going from .02 to .04 worked perfectly as mentioned in previous comments.

  96. Help…..I have a pink Verizon v3c. I have dl’d the Razr V3C Usb Driver. I am using RSD lite 2.5. Flashed the phone with GATW_X_01.0F.02P_PRIhh14145_SuperUpgrade_02_BOOT6500_X_R21.1_V1.8.1P.shx. Before I did that, I tried a hack “How to change the Verizon front logo”

    BitPim 0.8.07
    Motorola v3c USB Drivers (http://forum.osnn.net/showthread.php?t=80317)
Install the Motorola v3c USB Drivers
    Install BitPim 0.8.07
You will need to view the filesystem under View/filesystem. BitPim 0.8.07 doesn’t nativity support V3c
    Browse to mobile
Override verizon.gif with another file with the same name. Do not delete the file!
    The file is 96 x 80

Tried that and completely wiped my image file, even though i did exactly as instructed. The image i replaced was a 96 x 72 file.

Then I tried to flash down to 02 version. Have flashed 3 times now and my phone is totally wacked, although the flash on rsdlite says it was successful and passed. After powering back up, i get the searching for network symbol and then that’s it. I then get the screen that says my number is xxxxxxxxxx. That’s it. I can’t do anything else with it.

What the heck do I do now? Any ideas?

  100. Hi Brent,

I don’t really like posting links to things that are easily found on Google. I really am trying to be helpful, but people should also be willing to put in some effort in finding these things.

For example, just do a search on RSD Lite and explore the results. You’ll find one of them to be a link to RSD Lite version 2.6, which should work just as well with my intructions. In fact, I’m confident that my instructions will work with all versions 1.91 or higher. I said confident, not absolutely positivie. But I have read comments from other people on this post that have indicated that higher versions of RSD Lite have worked for them.

Be sure to do your part and read through the useful comments that have been posted here. There are quite a few comments, but you can skip those that won’t be useful to you.

    Good luck.

Thanks Joe! I recently upgraded my Verizon Razr Vc3 at their store from v.03 to v.04 and was sorely disappointed to find that no transfers of any type were possible. With your easy to grasp procedure and files found at ryfiles and rapidshare reprogging was fast, simple, and painless. I don’t know what “techies” was trying to communicate on May 21…his style is a little convoluted… but the downgrade works with MPT natively either by USB or Bluetooth. RSD Lite was a bit scary at the point of steps 8 & 9 ( prog said it was still in process after powering on, off and back on again )and when I went to close the program it reported that doing so while it was still in process could damage the phone, but it seems that by the time it prompts for power up it is safely finished.
Once again thanks..way cool, or as the young’uns
might say whey kewl. See ya at the Rose Bowl….

  112. Hey techies, it actually works. thats just a change of 1 bit. i am amazed, how verizon people rip us off. FU** THEM. everything is working on my phone. I just wanted to point out one thing in your description.

IF the value of byte at memory offset 0×006a is 0xe3 then it means in bits it is 11100011, which means the bit0 is already set to 1 and in that case your phone already has OBEX enabled. other wise if it is 0xe2 then bit looks like 11100010 and then bit0 is disabled. you just have to enable the bit0. COOL … LOV YOU>>>>>>>>

  113. BEWARE OF CURRENT SOFTWARE UPGRADE AT VERIZON STORES ! Just as an experiment I downgraded to V.02and then went to the V store for an upgrade. Was talking to the tech ( as a splash screen in the background was saying not to discuss proprietary subjects in public ) and asked what version of RSD they were using. He replied that they had just installed V4.xsomething. When I got home I tried both MPT and BitPIM and neither would trnsfer files anymore… so back down to v.02 and back up to v.04 at home and voila.. it worked again. Saw a screen on V’s firmware upgrade at the store that leads me to believe that it no longer just overlays the upgrade but completely erases the firmware before the installation of v.04. Consequently I recommend just doing it yourself with the files that are availaable at the sources listed above. Once again thanks JB. You mentioned that your upgrade was successful at the V store.. however I don’t think that is any longer the case.
