It was good to visit with you this past weekend. You look good and I hope your studies will go well the rest of the quarter. Please continue to give your work the importance that is required … It sounds like you’re on the right track. I’d like to hear your other test results when you receive them — maybe later this week.

I was thinking about what you said over lunch about the bible studies. And although I was encouraged to hear you say that. I’d like you to consider it very carefully. Honestly, you’ve said a lot of things, but have not followed through. It’s important for a man to be his word. And while I believe that investing in your spiritual life has great rewards both in this life and after, I think that saying things without really meaning them or without following through just erodes trust. Basically, you said the same thing before you left for school this fall, but nothing changed. And in light of that, it just seems like you brought it up because of me. I didn’t ask. Let your actions speak for you because words are empty without them. I hope you understand I’m speaking about more than just attending a bible study. I’m trying to spur you to examine your convictions.

Colossians 3:23-24 — “Whatever you do, do your work heartily as for the Lord rather than for men, knowing that it is from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance. It is the Lord Christ whom you serve.”

Deep in my heart, I long for you to follow Jesus and make him Number One in your life. But only God himself working in you can spur you to action, not me and not even your or my feeble attempts at “working” for him. If you feel conviction in your heart, then follow your heart. I pray it will be the Lord’s leading and not the emptiness of the world.

Every man follows his convictions - our actions are a natural outflow of convictions that reveals the heart, a man’s values, desires, and what he stands for. Even what is hidden behind private profiles or deleted histories is seen by God. What is visible to the world is only part of the person; what is hidden indicates the content of a man’s heart and character.

I pray that someday we can have authentic conversations about spiritual things, not a forced weekly meeting over a book, but a deep connection between the hearts — two men, father and son, connecting along the journeys of life, sharing struggles without judgment and in love, safe with each other.

I love you and pray you still want me as a father in your life. You are one of the most important people in my life, part of the reasons I do all that I do. I only want what is best for you, just as any good father wants for his son. As you grow to be an independent man, I hope you see the good things I’ve tried to teach you and apply them. The world deceives us; its desires are for our destruction.

All my love to you my sweet son . . .
