Memorial Day Contrast

Veterans Memorial 2

Boy Scouts placed a flag at each grave site in honor of the fallen

When Pourpa and I were leaving for the Star Wars convention last Saturday, we saw hundreds of boy scouts at the Veterans’ Memorial in Los Angeles. They were placing an American flag at each grave site to honor the memories and service of fallen soldiers. That made me feel good.

Then this story made me feel sick. This is not freedom of speech; it is a hate crime.

The Challenge of Forgiving Ourselves

Tuesday, May 29th, 2007

In Touch Daily Devotional: Psalm 32:1-2

Lord, remind me when I get stuck here that you died on the cross for whatever past sin is imprisoning me. Release the guilt from me if I have truly confessed the transgression to you.

Obstacles to Forgiving Ourselves

Monday, May 28th, 2007

In Touch Daily Devotional: Psalm 51:10-12

Lord, you know all things. You knew all my sins before I was even born and committed them. You know the consequences of my sin that are still going to be played out. And you knew in your omniscience that today’s devotional would align directly with this past Sunday’s sermon. Help me to remember what was said at church: If we cannot let go of the the guilt of sin that is already forgiven, then we are basically saying the Jesus’ death on the cross is not good enough.

Daniel: Forward By Faith

Sunday, May 27th, 2007

In Touch Daily Devotional: Daniel 6

Lord, I confess that I don’t want trials in my life. But I ask only that you help me grow in faith required to pass through the trails that escape no one. You promise that there is no situation for which you have not already given us enough faith and all that we need to endure it. Make me like Daniel whom his peers “could find no ground for complaint or any fault, because he was faithful, and no error or fault was found in him.”

Jesus Take the Wheel

Friday, May 25th, 2007

For my written assignment in Greek class, I’ve decided to translate the Carrie Underwood hit, “Jesus Take the Wheel” into modern Greek. It looks cool, but it doesn’t sound anything like the song in English. Here is what the chorus looks like in English:

Jesus take the wheel
Take it from my hands
Cause I can’t do this on my own
I’m letting go
So give me one more chance
Save me from this road I’m on
Jesus take the wheel

And then in Greek:

Ιήσους πάρε το τιμόνι
Το πάρε από τα χέρια μου
Γιατί δεν μπορώ να το κάνω μόνη μου
Εγώ αφήνω
Έτσι μου δώστε μια άλλη ευκαιρία
Σώστε μένα από αυτό το δρόμο που στο είμαι
Ιήσους πάρε το τιμόνι

David: Forward By Faith

Thursday, May 24th, 2007

In Touch Daily Devotional: 1 Samuel 17:31-51

From verses 46-47:

… that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel, 47and that all this assembly may know that the LORD saves not with sword and spear. For the battle is the LORD’s, and he will give you into our hand.

Lord, help me to remember to check my motives (at the door) first. I ask that you remind me as often as possible that all blessings, victories, and hardships are for your glory and fame.

Forgiving Hurts We Don’t Deserve

Tuesday, May 22nd, 2007

In Touch Daily Devotional: Colossians 3:12-14

Dear Lord, please help me to continue to focus my eyes and heart on you, NOT on myself. It is a truism that faith is often expressed by acting on what I know is right because it is right. If I wait, Lord, for my feelings to get in line with what is right, I may never act.

Thank you for the example in this short text:

We’ve wronged Jesus in ways no one has ever wronged us. We’ve denied His rightful place in our lives. We’ve doubted His Word. We’ve ignored His instruction. We’ve abandoned Him and kicked Him out of our daily lives. We’ve sinned against Him and shamed Him by sinning against other people.

In spite of my own actions, you call me and forgive me, even when I fail you daily. And because of that, I will now choose to do what is right in forgiving someone that I have put off.

In Touch Daily Devotional: Ephesians 4:31-32

One, two, three strikes… Not much to say Lord, except act on my convictions. Bless my actions out of faith despite my feelings.

Moses: Forward by Faith

Sunday, May 20th, 2007

In Touch Daily Devotional: Exodus 14

And Moses said to the people, “Fear not, stand firm, and see the salvation of the LORD, which he will work for you today.

– Exodus 14:13

Thank you Lord that you are the same today, yesterday, and forever. The same power and love that you showed to Israel when they faced the Egyptian army is the same for me today in 2007.

Help me to stand firm when I face challenges and temptation. Let your power be seen, O God.
