Ecto

Tuesday, September 6th, 2005

So I’m trying this software called ecto. It’s a blogging interface, seems pretty cool. We’ll see how it goes. It seems to integrate with WordPress just fine. So far as I’m typing this entry, I like it. It also integrates with iPhoto, iTunes, and Amazon, pretty nifty. Those are more features than what I would get with the current interface plugins that I have. It also easily helps me categorize with categories and Technorati tags.

Dave speaks highly of ecto, so I’ll try it for a few days.

Update: The only thing I don’t like about this software so far is that I can’t integrate my Ultimate Tag Warrior plugin with it. I don’t really use Technorati tags within my posts, although the plugin I use seems to automatically record each tag over there. I would prefer if there were more customization possible and the Technorati tag thing could automatically place the tags in the same format and location as what I have now. It doesn’t make sense for me to compose the entry in ecto and then have to edit the tags in the WordPress interface. I may occasionally use ecto, but I can’t see myself using two interfaces just to post one article. That would be a waste of time.

Vacation Blogging

Tuesday, May 17th, 2005

While I am in Greece, comments will be turned off. I’m not sure how much Internet access I will have since Josephine’s relatives do not like technology. Perhaps I may be able to upload some stuff one or two times at an Internet cafe in Athens. But for sure, I will maintain entries on my laptop, and worse case, will have to upload them when I return.

Amazon Sweetness

Wednesday, March 2nd, 2005

In honor of Eliot Landrum’s 5th birthday of his blog, I shared the five most recent books that I’ve read. And I won a $10 gift certificate to be used at Amazon.com.

Thanks Eliot. You are very cool. I think it’s neat how you can “meet” someone through a blog. Someday, maybe we can actually meet IRL if I am ever in Texas again. I went to Plano, Texas for the first time a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away when I was in Air Force ROTC. We had flown into Plano Lubbock to some Reese Air Force base, the name of which I forget, but I flew a T-37 trainer jet. Here’s a pic to prove it.

Day 8: Sunnyvale

Saturday, January 1st, 2005

Woke up really late, 11:30 AM, after falling asleep at 1:30 AM.

Went out to Valley Fair mall, then dinner in Saratoga, fancy Italian place called “Bella Saratoga”. Ate chicken and mushroom pizza. Was for Josephine’s birthday (and her twin sister).

Feeling anti-social (here’s why), reading American Soldier and “trying” to fix a small problem with a plugin on this blog.

I’m A Believer

Tuesday, December 14th, 2004

Well, I took the plunge and converted my web site from Movable Type to WordPress. Thanks to Rob, I found Mark Jaquith.

Mark did the conversion process for me. A few things about Mark. He’s good at this and knows his stuff. He works fast, yet efficiently. His friendly service providing customer satisfaction is without equal. The price is reasonable. And he’s a nice guy, a businessman with integrity. You can read about his services here.

If you’ve ever thought about making the switch, you should do it. I love my “new” blog. It’s much faster than before… and NO MORE of that stupid rebuilding, no matter how “dynamic” MT says they are.

Update: WordPress is SO much better than MT! It’s faster, has all the same features, and much more. I like my new comment features, see drop down comments. And I can’t say it enough: If you need to convert your massive MT blog, contact Mark Jaquith. His work is excellent :!:

I added a live comment preview thanks to Eclecticism. Make a comment and check it out.

Should I switch?

Wednesday, December 8th, 2004

Rob from Say Anything has made the switch to WordPress.

Now I am really tempted to do it too, but I hate to lose all the functionality I have with the MT plugins. What should I do??

Netflix

Wednesday, December 8th, 2004

Well, I got credit for my free offer towards my free iPod thingie. So I canceled my Blockbuster online account through which I rented several DVDs for free.

So now I’m trying Netflix for a couple of reasons.

  1. It’s convenient to receive DVD rentals at my home through the mail.
  2. Movable Type has a plugin that works with the Netflix Queue.

So I’ll be working with that in the next few days, so you should be able to see what movies I’m watching, have watched, and will watch.

Movable Type vs. WordPress

Monday, July 26th, 2004

Well, this site just started and already I’m having second thoughts. Should I switch over to WordPress? You bloggers out there . . . What do you think? From what I read on the Internet, the two main arguments for switching are: 1) WordPress is free, open source and 2) WordPress is easier to use given its PHP backbone AND no “Rebuild” required for updates.

[I spoke too soon. . . When exploring the Six Apart web site, I found this concerning the annoying "rebuilding."]

It sounds very tempting, but I spent sooooo many hours learning MT and how to format the templates for this site.

The one plus for MT is that it is an established system with lots of support and extendable features available through plugins.

[I think I'll stick with MT!]

Gettin’ the Hang of MT

Sunday, July 25th, 2004

I think I’m getting the hang of Movable Type. After numerous hours of messing around with the Stylesheet, I think I’ve found something that I really like.

What do you think?
