It is finished

Remind me never to procrastinate again. I finished my humungus assignment about 15 minutes ago. The professor let me turn it in a couple of hours after midnight.

Scream

Monday, October 9th, 2006

I am so sick and tired of school. This attitude is exacerbated by my recent discovery that I have a 1500-word paper due tomorrow — the joys of procrastination. It’s not so much that I dislike school, but rather, I’m tired of getting more degrees. If I had my choice I’d take only recreational classes in graphics arts and photography.

By the time I’m done with my education I’ll have multiple degrees after my name - whoop de do.

Matrixectomy II

What a way to cap off a crazy week! Last weekend, the day after my right toenail finally recovered with the nail looking normal after more than a year, there was a thin, remnant of the old nail bed in the side of my toe. So it lifted up and I yanked it out, but a little piece of the old nail was stuck in the corner.

So this morning I went and had the same procedure done again. What a weird experience with the novacaine plus the re-cutting of my toenail. Then the doctor digging into the corner to get the little piece out. Yikes. I’ll spare you the pictures since it basically looks the same as last time.

That’s the way to cap off this crazy week of busy busy work and busy busy school (two assignments in Photoshop and an exam in Instructional Design).

Trading Time

Monday, September 25th, 2006

For dollars.

At least that’s they way I’ve felt for the last couple of weeks. It’s been “hella” crazy as they say.

Work is work. It just gets busier and busier as my responsibilities increase. But I do like it. I find it rewarding and satisfying. Thankfully, today I finished my latest storyboard just in time before my trip.

School on the other hand is a drag. My Photoshop class is okay, although this weekend I’ve completed two assignments in one day since I’ll be headed for Minneapolis soon. The EdTec class is just plain unmotivating. I hope to find more motivation other than the hope of future promotion and financial gain. But this week, we have an exam that I’m somewhat stressed about. I guess once I take the exam on Wednesday night, I can relax somewhat and pack for the trip.

What’s the latest here?

Well, I’ve been juggling lots of things lately: two classes, work, and church and stuff.

I was taking Photography 230 Digital Darkroom at Palomar College. But today I dropped the class and am taking Graphics Communications 140 Digital Imaging/Photoshop 1 (online) instead. I dropped the class because I did not like the teacher nor how he conducted his class.

First, he’s a condescending and arrogant person. Second, last night he told us to work on our first assignment, but gave no other direction. So almost everyone in the class stared at their computer screen since he does not like it when people leave early. I opened a few of the pictures that I had taken for the assignment, but beyond that, I did not really know what to do. And with 20+ people in the class, it was very difficult to get his attention.

The other class I take is EdTec 544 Instructional Design through San Diego State. They have the leading instructional design Master’s program in the nation. And I am starting a second master’s there, but through online courses so I have no commuting down to State.

Work has been great, though busy. We’re full-on into storyboarding. And although I struggle with getting started on storyboards, I think I’m getting better at it and producing great-quality design documents.

My reading schedule has been wild to say the least. On top of two classes, Pourpa and I have already finished reading Desiring God: Meditations of a Christian Hedonist. But now we are finishing up another Piper book, Don’t Waste Your Life. Additionally, I’m trying to read Above All Earthly Pow’rs: Christ in a Postmodern World before the Desiring God conference at the end of this month. But I honestly don’t think I will finish the book before the conference because it’s pretty heady reading. John and I are also finishing up Tender Warrior: God’s Intention for a Man for our monthly accountability and reading times.

Finally, owning a house can sometimes be more of a headache, but I need to remember that having a house is a tremendous blessing. Despite the additional and unexpected expenses of power washing our dirty house, fixing a slab leak underneath the downstairs bathroom, and now learning that we have some fungus rot (due to moisture) in some of our wood fixtures, I’d say I’m content, but kinda irritated with all the outflow of money into maintaining the roof that goes over our head.

Accepted

Tuesday, May 2nd, 2006

So today I was unoficially accepted into the EdTec program at SDSU. I plan to start taking classes regularly again in the fall, one class per semester– all online.

Following a careful review of your application, the Department of Educational Technology is recommending to the Graduate Division that you be admitted to the University with classified graduate standing. Such admission is not official until you receive a formal notice of admission from the Registrars Office.

Will all this schooling never end?

Taken on an anniversary getaway to Little Italy.

I took this picture on our little 24-hour getaway to downtown San Diego. This particular place was in Little Italy. We waited until it was dark. I think a bus drove by in the background while the shutter was open, which is what I believe caused the multiple reflected images in the striped blurred background.

I think this is one of my most awesome pictures ever.

I’m gonna turn this one for one of my required pieces for the low light photography assignment.

A shot I’ve always wanted to do - timed exposure of car lights

Ever since I’ve been about 12 years old, I’ve wanted to shoot a picture like this. I never did do it until now. It’s much easier with digital photography. The lack of film actually makes this an easy shot to produce because you can shoot as many pictures as you want without having to worry about running out of film and then worrying about color processing or producing the shot in the darkroom.

I was originally going to turn this print in as part of my assignment on low light photography, but this past weekend I was able to take a better picture of something more interesting that will hopefully show up better on paper after I print it.

Contemplative Josephine

For this one, I used the healing brush to take away some lines, wrinkles, and skin blemishes. I erased the picture from behind her head and cloned her hair to cover up the ersure. Then I inserted the picture from Greece (Byazntine Museum painting) and blurred it to imply suggestion and to match the depth of field. I also decreased the red and decreased the exposure. Compare to the original photo.

Yia-Yia in Pyrgí

I used my best photograph from Greece as one shot for my portrait assignment. I took some of the red out of the background tiles and her face. I blurred the edges around her blouse. And I did a gradient Gaussian glur on the background to match the depth of field and bring more attention to her face. I like it. It’s better than the original photo.

Royce Hall à la Hockney

This is the final result from our third photo assignment. I didn’t really like the way this turned out. And I’m glad I’m done with the assignment. This one was more difficult for me because it involved more manipulation with Photoshop rather than actual photography. The teacher said he liked it, which is good, but I’m ready for the next assignment.

We have to print this as an 8.5″ x 11″ and dry mount it on an 11″ x 14″ board. The teacher showed us how to do our own mounts in the photo lab, but I think I will go to Aaron Brothers and pay them to mount it for me. I can’t imagine 15 people from my class trying to mount the final photos while there will probably be other students using the lab at the same time.
